For the next eight days and eight nights, let’s show the world that antisemitism has no place to hide when our stars shine EVEN brighter this Hanukkah!
Share a photo or video on Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, or Facebook and use the hashtag #OwnYourStar to showcase YOUR Jewish pride—whether that’s by displaying a Star of David on your necklace, your favorite menorah, spinning dreidels, sizzling latkes, or sharing a memorable Jewish experience.

Happy Chanukah! Night number 4!
I’m wearing my Carbeth Cardigan today, pattern by Kate Davies and yarn from macheteshoppe from doeweknit 🤗🤗 I made modifications to the pattern, converting it into a saddle shoulder. The instructions to do this are in the book Knitting Without Tears by Elizabeth Zimmermann.
Today was a whirlwind of activities! We were invited to a fun sufganiyot party where our friends fried up homemade donuts all day and made interesting fillings and toppings. my favorite was the Mango Sticky Rice which was filled with coconut sticky rice (picture 6).
Desi also tried out his new Hanukkah present from my mom, a deep fryer! He made fried Oreos and fried pickles (pictures 4 and 5). He brought them to the donut party and shared them 💙
We also went to a beautiful Hanukkah event at sukajewelrystore where the kids decorated Magen David (Jewish stars) with Swarovski crystals. Neil liked it but didn’t want to have his picture taken (last photo).
Why so much fried food?
On Hanukkah it’s customary to eat food fried in oil to commemorate the miracle of Hanukkah. There was only one tiny bit of olive oil after the Greek army ransacked the holy Jewish temple in Jerusalem in 164 BCE. It shouldn’t have been enough to light the menorah for even one night. But a miracle happened and the oil lasted 8 nights.

Happy Chanukkah!
.
I`m a little behind in posting our first night of Chanukkah as a family of four but all bets are off when you have a newborn and a toddler. My two favorite things about this photo are:
1. Sophie is 3. Her tongue confirms everything.
2. Hannah is only 6 weeks old and she is already copying whatever it is her cool big sister does.

This year’s Chanukah is the most meaningful one I have probably celebrated. For me it is a time of reflection of our past and now present.
The Torah specifies that the oil to be used for the menorah is ”shemen zayis zach kasis l’maor,” pure olive oil beaten for the light.
Although we are all tired, sad and in pain may we remember that light will come in if we let it shine through our cracks.
Here’s to peace, light, enlightenment and strong roots. All the things an olive tree represents.

Let’s Stop Hate with Jewish Pride
For 2,000 years, the Star of David has been a proud symbol of Jewish heritage. But it has also been used to terrorize the Jewish community and spread hate.
And antisemitism is rising again. Since October 7, more than half of Jewish college students feel less safe on campus, and 1 in 3 students say they need to hide their Jewish identity. And we are recording the highest levels of antisemitism on campus…ever. That’s not okay.
Hillel is calling on our community to stand up to rising antisemitism right here, right now: It’s time to #OwnYourStar this Hanukkah and let our stars and Jewish pride shine even brighter.
